In Indian villages, the commons provide food, fodder and timber to farming systems, animal husbandry, resource conservation, and recharge of groundwater. The poor derive upto 54% of their income from commons.
We are looking for proposals that explore the importance of CPR, issues related to control, management and governance of the commons, access to CPR, especially for the socially excluded, decentralisation and collective action around the commons, the impact of public policy, etc.
Five fellowships on CPR are being offered. Each fellowship must result in a series of five or more original articles (with accompanying photographs) on the proposed subject of research, totalling 7,500 words or more. The articles must be readable, written in a journalistic and not academic style, combining perspective and analysis with reportage and human interest stories and, when appropriate, views and information from experts. All content must be submitted in English.
All content will be uploaded on www.infochangeindia.org and used in advocacy and other material by FES and CCDS. The results will be announced by mid-March. Fellows are expected to complete their work in April-May, and submit all content by June 5, 2010.
Eligibility
The fellowship is open to independent journalists and researchers living in India only. These will be awarded to journalists who have produced effective, in-depth and relevant stories on Tuberculosis (TB), and have conveyed these to a wide audience.

This year, two awards of Rs 30,000 each will be presented for the best writing on TB by a print journalist in English. In addition, the best work on TB by a journalism student will be awarded Rs 15,000.

All entries submitted by working journalists must carry a by-line and have been published in a news publication in India between January 2009 and January 2010. Stories must highlight aspects of TB or TB-related complications in a sensitive and accurate manner.

All submissions will be evaluated by an eminent panel of specialists and the awards will be presented in February. The jury includes Dr. L.S. Chauhan, Deputy Director General (TB), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India; Dr. Nevin Wilson, Director, The Union, South East Asia; Dr. P. R. Narayanan, Former Director, Tuberculosis Research Centre; Dr. Jaya Shreedhar, Technical Health Advisor, Internews Network and Dr. Arjun Rajagopal, President, REACH and Medical Director, Sundaram Medical Foundation.

Informed and accurate journalism can have a significant impact on public understanding of tuberculosis, a crucial public health concern in India. India bears one-third of the world?s global TB burden; in addition, there is growing disposition to multidrug resistance, increasing public health costs. All of this is compounded by a general lack of awareness of TB and its consequences ? most of all, that TB is completely curable.

Through this initiative, the REACH-Lilly MDR-TB Partnership Media Project seeks to highlight the vital role played by the media in informing the public and decision-makers about TB prevention and care.

The last date for submission of entries is 31st January. What is the current status of implementation of the projects proposed under JNNURM? Have there really been any long- or short-term reforms in the way India’s cities are growing? The Planning Commission's half-term review of the scheme is due this year. What is the review most likely to find?
Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) offers a media fellowship to journalists to study, investigate and report on JNNURM in our cities – with respect to two key components: transport and water supply, sanitation and sewerage. The fellowship offers a unique opportunity to travel to JNNURM cities to look at the issues and concerns at close range and to write and comment on them.
Who can applyThese fellowships are open to Indian journalists only, including freelancers, photojournalists and television/video/radio journalists.
Suggested areas of researchProposals must focus on either transport or water supply, sanitation and sewerage, or both in JNNURM cities only. Under either head, applicants can opt to investigate a wide range of issues:
State of infrastructure
Proposals and projects
State of implementation
Economics: the money trail
Corruption, controversies and conflicts
Impacts and benefits
See here the complete list of JNNURM cities.
DurationTwo months – March 2010 to April 2010 – with one month of travel time and another month for research, writing, publication and submission of stories and features.
Compensation and fundingSelected fellows will each receive a stipend of Rs 40,000 (subject to tax deductions at source) to support research, travel and writing between March 2010 and April 2010.
The stipend will be released in two installments – the first as a travel grant at the start of the fellowship programme and the second after its successful completion.
Applications must be accompanied by the following documents:
Curriculum vitae
For print journalists, three samples of published work on development issues. By ‘published work’, we mean articles published by/in national or regional newspapers or magazines.
Those writing in regional languages must have at least one of their articles translated into English.
For television and radio journalists, two samples of telecasted/broadcasted programmes on development issues – those telecasting/broadcasting in regional languages must also give a short written summary of the programme along with the CDs of the samples.
A letter of support from the editor that the output under the fellowship will be published/broadcast (mandatory for all candidates, including freelancers).
A comprehensive fellowship proposal outlining (a) the city/cities/state on which the proposal is focused, (b) the subject/s and story ideas that the applicant proposes to focus on, (c) tentative travel plans and (d) a list of people who might be interviewed.
Last date for submission of applications February 20, 2010
Fellowships outputSelected applicants from the print media will be expected to generate feature and news article/s totaling 5,000 words, based on the research carried out under the fellowship. Original clippings of these articles will have to be submitted at the completion of the fellowship programme.
Selected applicants from the audio-visual media will be expected to generate either a single film/broadcast or a series of episodes, based on the research carried out under the fellowships. CDs of these outputs will have to be submitted at the completion of the fellowship programme.
Applicants who complete the fellowship programme successfully, will receive certificates of merit.
Additional research opportunityCSE might offer some shortlisted applicants a separate and additional research opportunity -- to survey urban transportation projects in selected JNNURM cities. Under this, shortlisted applicants will be expected to investigate and collect/collate information on the basis of a specific format/questionnaire prepared by CSE.
CSE would expect the shortlisted applicants to complete this research project on a priority basis within the fellowship time-frame. CSE will pay an additional small stipend to each applicant for doing this research on its behalf.
Applications and queries should be addressed to:
Shachi ChaturvediAssistant CoordinatorMedia Resource CentreCentre for Science and Environment41, Tughlakabad Institutional AreaNew Delhi 110 062Ph: 011-29955124, 29955125, Fax: 011-29955879Mobile: 98187 50007Email: shachi@cseindia.orgWebsite: www.cseindia.org

Sahara SamayTV channel needs people

Sahara Samay Mumbai is looking for people. Numerous urban centres dot the South Asian seaside, buzzing with anthropogenic activities like industrial, commercial, and tourist. At the same time these coasts are also ecological treasure-troves with the Sunderbans in Bangladesh, corals in Sri Lanka, turtles in Pakistan and the abundant and endangered marine life of Maldives. Habitat to both biodiversity and humans – coasts are under constant struggle to conserve the former and sustain the latter. Naturally, they are under tremendous pressure – from population, pollution, wastes, industrial activities and tourism. So are the communities dependent on coasts – the fisherfolk. They are increasingly being pushed to the brink with their livelihood and habitat destroyed by unchecked urbanisation, commercial fishing and tourism. To add to the woes, climate change induced natural disasters like cyclones, tsunamis and sea level rise only aggravate the crisis displacing populations and wiping pout marine life. And anthropogenic pressures only further intensify the ravages of climate change. On one hand Maldives faces extinction due to sea level rise, Bangladesh is losing large tracts of land and its biodiversity to erosion. While Pakistan’s fisherfolk are losing their catch, Sri Lanka is witness to coastal degradation due to dense habitation. The worst sufferers in these cases are both, the region’s ecological wealth and the coastal communities. Under the second CSE Media Fellowship programme for the South Asian region, Centre for Science and Environment invites journalists from Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka to study, investigate and report on the pressures, conflicts, impacts, actions and inactions that are being played out on their coasts. The fellowship offers a unique opportunity to travel to these regions to look at the issues and concerns at close range, and to write and comment on them.

Suggested areas of research
•
Industrial development
•
Cities on the coast
•
Tourism
•
Climate change
•
Coastal habitats and their conservation
•
Communities and livelihoods
•
Legislation and regulation

Duration

Two months – January 2010 to March 2010.

Compensation and funding

Selected fellows will each receive a stipend of Indian National Rupee 50,000 to support research, travel and writing between January 2010 and March 2010. The IJP offers a opportunity for talented Journalists working in The People's Republic of China/Hongkong, The Republic of Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, India and Socialist Republic of Vietnam to come to Germany in May and June 2010.The delegates work for eight weeks in Asian (English language) and German media. At the same time they research their own stories and work as correspondents for their home newsrooms. Hereby, the delegates gain a thorough insight into the politics, economy and culture of the host country as well as getting an impression of the day to day working practices of the host media. In individual cases a pure research bursary without attachment to a newsroom may be granted.
In early May all delegates come together for an intensive introduction seminar in Berlin। This is immediately followed by the traditional alumni meeting of former German delegates which guarantees a platform for intensive exchanges of information, tips and experiences.

Mode of Payment
All delegates of the programme receive a one-off payment of 3,600 Euro from IJP. This should cover most travel, food and accommodation expenses as well as health insurance. Payment by the host media for the work produced is not expected.
Application
Asian and German journalists between the ages of 28 to 38 years who regularly contribute to German or Asian newspapers, TV and radio media as well as online services can apply. Very good English language skills for the German applicants as well as good English and German skills for the Asian applicants are an important precondition for the application.Knowledge of an Asian language are desirable but not essential for German applicants. Applicants should send the following application documents to the above contact address: A curriculum vitae in English or German, a passport photograph, a brief description of your research aims in the host country as well a journalistic reference from your editor. The reference should have the double function of supporting your application as well as guaranteeing that you will be available for the entire duration of the programme.

Alumni
Since 1995, over 220 journalists have taken part in the Asia Pacific Fellowship. The IJP fosters the contact of former delegates amongst each other through a regular newsletter, e-mails, the alumni network and the annual alumni meeting.
Partner Media
The host media will be chosen togehter with the participants.
Programme Partners
The following companies have been long time supporters of the programme:Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach-StiftungAllianz S.E.Auswärtiges AmtGoethe InstitutInWEnt gGmbHSiemens AGA special thanks goes to our sponsors and the representatives of the newsrooms in Asia and Germany as well as the embassies.
